In 2016, the longstanding Don LaBerge Memorial Golf Classic joined forces with the Golf for the Cure in memory of Janice E. Crist. The tournament was a huge success and raised $50,000 for the Patient Financial Assistance Program to make life better for Albertans facing cancer. Together these tournaments joined forces with the Alberta Cancer Foundation to kick off the 1st Annual Alberta Cancer Foundation Golf Classic in 2017. With the help of our supporters and generous donors, over $830,000 net has been raised for patients facing cancer across the province.

The 4th Annual Alberta Cancer Foundation Golf Classic will be supporting the Patient Financial Assistance Program, a program that gives financial support to patients and families facing cancer, so that they can focus on what matters most – healing.

Established in 2007, 2 years after passing of a great leader, mentor, friend, husband, father, and grandfather. The Don LaBerge Memorial Golf Classic raised funds in support of The Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Patient Financial Assistance Program to make life better for Albertans facing cancer.

Don’s personal experience with the exceptional care provided at The Tom Baker Cancer Centre and his passion for golf made the decision to establish the tournament to raise funds for the Alberta Cancer Foundation an obvious choice. The event increased awareness and generated some of the much needed funds for The Alberta Cancer Foundation to continue research and provide assistance in the battle against cancer. A total of over $830,000 net has been raised for the Alberta Cancer Foundation since the event inception.

In 2016, the Don LaBerge Memorial Golf Classic partnered with the Golf for the Cure in memory of Janice E. Crist. The tournament was a huge success and raised $50,000 for the Patient Financial Assistance Program. Together these tournaments have joined forces to kick off our new Alberta Cancer Foundation Golf Classic. This year they will embark on a new investment that will give a direct impact to patients and their families. This year, the committee has chosen to invest in our Patient Financial Assistance Program, which will help cancer patients that simply cannot afford out-of-pocket expenses for items such as medications, medical supplies, transportation, accommodations and child care. They offer closer to home support to ease the journey for cancer patients and their families.

Together, on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at the Country Hills Golf Club, we have the power to change lives, one swing at a time!

Don LaBerge Annual Memorial Golf Classic

In memory of DON LABERGE, By Kham Lin

The Don LaBerge Annual Memorial Golf Classic was established in 2007, two years after the passing of a great leader, friend, husband, father and grandfather. This tournament raised funds in support of the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Patient Financial Assistance Program to make life better for Albertans facing cancer. Don is best remembered for his devotion to helping bring a better standard for environmental monitoring in Canada. He helped steer the direction of the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation (CALA) right from the start and was one of the three signatories on the application to incorporate CALA in 1989. Don also served as President and Board of Directors for CALA. Don’s contribution to improve Alberta’s post-secondary education and training are also evident in the world-renowned Southern Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary. Under Don’s leadership and consultation, the Chemical Laboratory Technology program at SAIT has trained countless skilled workers and leaders in our communities. The Endowment Scholarship Fund had been set up at SAIT to recognize Don’s contribution. Don’s personal experience with the exceptional care provided at The Tom Baker Cancer Centre and his passion for golf made the decision to raise funds for the Alberta Cancer Foundation through a tournament an obvious choice. The event increased awareness and generated a total of over $250,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

The Inaugural Golf for a Cure 2016

In memory of Janice E. Crist, By Tom Crist

The Inaugural Golf for a Cure in Memory of Janice E. Crist has been raising funds to support the Alberta Cancer Foundation (ACF) since 2016. Ultimately, the goal of this tournament is to make life better for Albertans and their families facing cancer. The tournament was held four years after the passing of Janice E. Crist who was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in May 2006. Although she wasn’t expect to live past one year, because of Jan’s strong will, positive attitude and the wonderful support of care staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, she underwent life-saving treatments and was able to enjoy six more cancer-free years. In 2012, Janice passed away from her cancer but is remembered as a wonderful and dedicated mother, grandmother, wife and friend to everyone and continues to be an inspiration to us all. This golf tournament raised awareness and raised funds for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Proceeds raised from that event were donated in Jan’s name to support the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Patient Financial Assistance Program. This year, we have once again partnered with the Don LaBerge Memorial Golf Tournament to create a new event in support of the Alberta Cancer Foundation. This joint tournament is now called the Alberta Cancer Foundation Golf Classic. We look forward to another great year, remembering those we have lost, those who still continue to push forward in their journey and those who have lost a loved one or have been impacted by cancer. Thank you for coming along on this journey with us!
